Invitation

Dear friends,

We are approaching to the seventh anniversary of the tournament, which was held in Slovakia in the beautiful alpine scenery of the High Tatras. However, more of you may recall that much sooner, in 1998, we organized the tournament in Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia. Every time we were delighted when you came to our country in large numbers and you liked your stay in Slovakia.

It is our great honour to invite you for the tournament EVS 2016 which will be held in Bratislava again. Since 1998, when we last organized it, a long time has already passed and Bratislava and its close surroundings have changed a lot. Therefore it might be interesting experience not only for the guests, sportsmen and sportswomen who will come to the city for the first time and through the sport event will make the first contact with it but also for those of you who took part in 1998. We hope you will enjoy our "little big city" as our capital city is called in the guidebooks. We will make an effort to create conditions for successful and good tournament as well as for activities that are an integral part of these regular events of statisticians - volleyball players in various places in Europe.

It gives me great pleasure to invite you on behalf of the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic to the XXVII EVS 2016 tournament, which will be held from 23rd to 25th September 2016 in Bratislava. I look forward to our meeting which will certainly contribute to further deepening of our informal contacts and relations between participating statisticians of European countries and I will be pleased if you accept this invitation in large numbers.

Best regards

Ľudmila Benkovičová, President of the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic

About EVS

The European Volleyball tournament for Statisticians - EVS - was originated, in 1990, in Voorburg, Netherlands, by some statisticians who were enthusiastic about volleyball.

The idea was simple. “All statisticians from all over Europe meet for a comparative volleyball competition”. Besides fun in the game and comparisons of the profession and working world one essential element of this tournament should be an understanding and tolerance for the different cultures.

The organizers of the first tournament established the headquarters of the EVS community in Voorborg (since 2003 in Heerlen). The unceasing effort and engagement of the headquarters led to a steady growing EVS community in the course of the years. We’d like to mention here that economically weaker countries could be partly supported to enable them to take part in the tournaments. The headquarters remains the central point of the EVS community. It is the point of contact for questions concerning the organization and provides help for the performance of EVS tournaments.

At first eleven representatives of different countries took part in the tournament. In the meantime the number of the participating countries increased to 16 countries and the number of participants increased to 300 persons. During the early years single tournaments were played in the categories Men’s, Women’s and Mixed teams. By now the mixed system with at least two female participants of each team has been accepted. Since 2003 the European Championship has to be played within two groups (A and B) while the participants of the A-Category have been fixed to ten teams.

As this event has become very popular the rule that only statisticians can take part in this tournament was relaxed within the last years. Meanwhile other participants from different part of the public administration are always welcome.

Lyrics

  • There was once a great idea
  • Regarding volleyball
  • It will bring our peoples near
  • a joyful time for all'
  • Volleyball … all over Europe then
  • For women and for men
  • It is here to stay
  • Give me EVS it's only the best
  • Every day i think of you
  • Your friends will tell you too
  • Give me EVS
  • It's only the best
  • If you are feeling our chime
  • You'll always find the time
  • To remember
  • Now we have our tournament
  • A place called EVS
  • Every year a big event
  • A weekend happiness
  • Just one year … and we'll go travelling
  • And we meet again
  • It is here to stay
  • Give me EVS it's only the best
  • Every day i think of you
  • Your friends will tell you too
  • Give me EVS
  • It's only the best
  • If you are feeling our chime
  • You'll always find the time
  • To remember

Tourist info

Accommodation – extra nights

EVS2016 Organizing Committee has no special agreement with Double Tree By Hilton Hotel management concerning the accommodation before or after two nights of tournament (Friday and Saturday). We suppose that many of you will use the opportunity to stay longer at Bratislava and get to know its attractions. If you want to stay at Double Tree By Hilton Hotel contact directly the reservation desk of the hotel. Of course there are a lot of other hotels in Bratislava. If you want to stay in a walking distance from Double Tree By Hilton Hotel we can recommend you several hotels (all of them are less expensive than Double Tree):
